This beautiful instrument with exquisite looking Mahogany used for its body and neck was part of a special run by Gibson for 'Music Machine' back in 2003 and is listed as such in the Vintage Guitar Buyers Guide. There were 10 SG Standards made in total in this run of guitars, and only 2 of them in cherry finish.
So this guitar is one out of two. One piece neck, long neck tenon, a richly colored Madagascar rosewood board, and a one piece mahogany body., so not your usual SG...
As the literature says: The Stinger SGs were built with an extra-stiff neck for solid pitch. The neck is a much fuller than the usual slim SG necks. Borders on the line with a 59 LP profile. These guitars were built from hand selected woods by head of Gibson wood purchasing Edwin Wilson, and David Carpenter of Music Machine. These guitars sold at a premium. The Stinger on the back of each headstock represents the step up in quality these guitars received.
As a youngster, Dave saw the Stingers painted on the expensive jazz boxes (as opposed to the exposed laminations on the head and neck join on less expensive models) and it spoke to him of quality. Years later he used that image to visually set his series of guitars apart from any other . These guitars were made as a series of no holds barred- top drawer Les Pauls. 142 total electric guitars were built (mostly Les Pauls) and snapped up by David's loyal customers. Burst Bucker 2 in the bridge, and Classic 57 in the neck position.
