The Vox AD120VTX combo amp made its debut at the 2003 Summer NAMM Music Trade Show in Nashville, TN, as the successor to the AD120VT, released just two years prior. According to Vox's "Summer 03" product catalog, both the AD120VT and AD120VTX were initially available side by side.
Key differences set the AD120VTX apart from its predecessor. Most notably, it featured upgraded Celestion/Vox "Neo Dog" 12" speakers, replacing the AD120VT's Celestion 7080s. The "Neo Dog" speakers incorporate neodymium magnets, which, due to their strong magnetic properties, require far less material to achieve the same power as larger ceramic magnets, significantly reducing weight. The result: a speaker half the weight of the Celestion 7080, with no compromise on tone or power handling.
The AD120VTX also introduced a durable plywood cabinet, contrasting with the medium-density fiberboard cabinet used in the AD120VT. Another valuable addition was a speaker impedance selector switch, absent on the AD120VT, enabling the AD120VTX to achieve its full 60W x 2 output power across 4, 8, or 16-ohm loads.
While modeled after the classic proportions of the Vox AC-30, the AD120VTX distinguished itself with a closed-back cabinet design, unlike the open-back AC-30.
The Vox VC-12 floor controller enhances the functionality and flexibility of Vox Valvetronix amplifiers, including the AD60VT, AD60VTX, AD60VTH, AD120VT, AD120VTX, AD120VTH models, as well as the tabletop Vox Tonelab. Note that the VC-12 is not a standalone effects pedal; it serves only as a controller for the effects and programming features in the Valvetronix "Blue" Series amps listed.
The VC-12 enables quick access to stored tone settings with "Bank Up," "Bank Down," and "Channel" footswitches, while the "Recall" switch reverts to the previously selected program. Four additional footswitches control the built-in amp effects. It also expands the amp’s storage capacity from 32 to 128 patches and includes an onboard guitar tuner with a mute option for silent tuning.
The VC-12 features two programmable rocker pedals, which can adjust volume, wah, or modulation speed. It connects to the amplifier via a standard Cat 5 network cable and comes with a durable cloth carrying case.
