Description

In early 2023, legendary guitarist and producer Dave Catching invited Jamie Stillman, founder of EarthQuaker Devices, to join a recording session at the iconic Rancho De La Luna studio in Joshua Tree. The session was part of a special project celebrating 30 years of Rancho’s musical legacy. Catching—known for his work with earthlings?, Eagles of Death Metal, and Queens of the Stone Age—has long been a champion of EarthQuaker Devices, both on stage and in the studio. This invitation was a significant honor, and Stillman didn’t hesitate to bring along one of EQD’s most beloved fuzz pedals: the Dirt Transmitter.

A Fuzz Classic Reimagined

First released in 2008, the Dirt Transmitter was EarthQuaker Devices’ modern take on a Fuzz Face-style circuit, born from a discovery of rare, low-gain silicon transistors. These components offered the warmth of germanium with the upper-mid grit of classic silicon fuzz—perfect for cutting through the mix with character and punch.

The pedal initially featured three controls—Fuzz, Tone, and Level—but quickly evolved to include an external Bias knob. This feature allowed players to “starve” the transistors of voltage, producing wild, gated, sputtering textures reminiscent of broken speaker cones and velcro rips. It’s a fuzz pedal that responds with nuance and drama, from smooth sustain to chaotic sputter, depending on how it’s dialed in.

Though discontinued in 2017, the Dirt Transmitter remained a favorite among fuzz aficionados—and during the Rancho session, its unique tones became a central part of the sound. Afterward, EarthQuaker Devices and Dave Catching decided to bring it back for a limited edition release tied to the anniversary album.

Special Artwork & EQD Heritage

For the special edition, EarthQuaker tapped Mike Egan, an Ohio-based artist and friend of the brand, to design the Rancho-themed graphics. The result is a visually striking homage to both Rancho De La Luna and the pedal’s gritty sonic legacy.

The Dirt Transmitter Rancho De La Luna Edition is not just a fuzz—it’s a story, a session, and a celebration wrapped into one. Now available at Max Guitar, this limited edition is ideal for players seeking rich vintage fuzz tones with modern tweakability and a killer backstory to match.
