Earthquaker Devices Gary Fuzz

Gary is a wild, two-headed beast born from the creative mind of Lee Kiernan of IDLES, and brought to life by EarthQuaker Devices as a compact but chaotic reimagining of the discontinued Gray Channel. One side is a full-throttle, pulse-width modulated fuzz, while the other is a crisp, op-amp-based overdrive. Together, they form a dynamic distortion machine built for noise, nuance, and everything in between.

The fuzz side (aka Gary’s right brain) delivers a square-wave fuzz tone that reacts to your picking dynamics with envelope-controlled pulse-width modulation. The Yes! control adjusts the sensitivity—low settings give you fat, sustaining fuzz, while higher settings bring in a biting, gated, almost synth-like tone that disappears and reappears with each strum. Add an expression pedal to sweep the modulation manually for wild filter-style effects. Oosh controls the fuzz’s explosive volume.

On the overdrive side (Gary’s left brain), you'll find a faithful recreation of the Gray Channel’s green side—an op-amp drive stripped of clipping diodes for a raw, mid-forward tone. Use Go to dial in anything from a clean boost to a punchy distortion, and That’s It to control the output. With fuzz feeding into the overdrive, Gary delivers a complex, reactive and utterly massive tone that’s built for stage chaos, studio precision, or just straight-up sonic mayhem.
