The first humbucker was Seth Lover's P.A.F. (named after the "Patent Applied For" sticker that was still attached to the underside). It was famously found in legendary Gibson guitars such as the Les Paul, SG, and ES series, as well as more exotic models like the Flying V and Explorer. For many guitarists, it remains the best—there's no aggressive growling, it's far too refined for that, but it can sing like no other. Even today, some of the heaviest players love using the P.A.F. in the neck position, as it harmonizes beautifully with a more aggressive-sounding pickup in the bridge.
