In 1982, Tom Scholz—guitarist and mastermind behind Boston—designed the Rockman X100 headphone amp through his company, Scholz Research & Development (SR&D). But it was more than just a headphone amp. With recording console connectivity, built-in effects, and tone-shaping features, the X100 became a secret studio weapon, defining the polished, chorus-drenched sound of 1980s arena rock.
Now, the MXR Rockman X100 Analog Tone Processor brings that legendary sound to a stompbox format. Working with veteran MXR engineer and SR&D alum Bob Cedro, the MXR team has recreated the signature crystalline cleans, crunchy harmonics, and shimmering modulation of the original unit. With four tonal presets, carefully tuned compression, and authentic bucket-brigade chorusing, this all-analog revival also includes mono and stereo operation, plus optional external mode switching for expanded control.
Classic Features, Modern Format
Re-Compressed:
The X100’s signature compression keeps your tone clear and balanced, whether clean or dirty. The circuit’s release time is optimized for each mode—slower for clean settings and faster for dirty tones. The amount of compression is tied to Input Gain, increasing naturally as you push the signal harder.
Four Mode Presets:
Just like the original, the Rockman X100 Analog Tone Processor offers four distinct modes:
- CLN2: Crystal-clear clean tones.
- CLN1: A punchier, mid-focused clean tone.
- Edge: Moderate clipping, highly responsive to Input Gain and guitar volume.
- Distortion: High-energy overdrive with smooth, singing sustain.
Level Control:
Dedicated Input Gain and Volume sliders make it easy to dial in the perfect response. Input Gain affects tone and compression—especially in Edge mode—while Volume controls output level.
Authentic Bucket-Brigade Chorus:
The onboard chorus, powered by the classic MN3007 bucket-brigade chip, adds lush depth and dimension at the push of a button.
Expanded Control Options:
Want more flexibility? Connect an off-board switch like the MXR TRS Split + Tap for foot control of the Mode switch. And if you’re after spacious, immersive tones, stereo operation sends your signal to separate L/R channels with dynamic chorus spread between them.
Arena Rock in a Box
The MXR Rockman X100 Analog Tone Processor delivers the legendary “rig-in-a-box” sound of the original—but this time, it’s pedalboard-ready. There’s never been an easier way to bring those massive arena rock tones to your setup.
