The 1973 Ovation Viper solid body guitar stands as a distinctive and innovative creation in the realm of electric guitars. Produced by the American company Ovation Instruments, the Viper was part of Ovation's short-lived venture into the electric guitar market. Known for its unconventional design, the Viper featured a single cutaway body made of alder, providing a unique aesthetic. The guitar also boasted high-quality electronics, including active onboard preamps, which added to its versatility and tonal capabilities. Despite the Viper's limited production run and ultimate discontinuation, it remains a sought-after collector's item for enthusiasts appreciative of its distinctive design and the quality associated with the Ovation brand.

Ovation, primarily recognized for its acoustic guitars with composite bowl backs, entered the electric guitar market in the early 1970s with models like the Viper, Preacher and Breadwinner. However, Ovation faced challenges establishing a foothold in the highly competitive electric guitar industry, and the company eventually shifted its focus back to its successful acoustic line. Ovation's history in the realm of electric guitars may be relatively brief, but it represents an interesting chapter in the brand's evolution. Today, Ovation remains a well-respected name in the musical instrument industry, particularly known for its acoustic innovations and commitment to craftsmanship. The Viper, along with other electric models from Ovation's past, stands as a testament to the company's willingness to explore new horizons and experiment with design in its pursuit of musical excellence.
